13 days after the original 1871 Palmer House opened, it was destroyed in the Fire. The second Palmer House, built of solid brick walls, with ceilings made of corrugated iron and plaster casts and a terra-cotta tiled roof, welcomed its first guests on November 8, 1873. |
The blueprints survived, proving that terra-cotta is a good fire-proof building material.
